ART Science and Implementation Plan Workshop

October 18-20, 2010, Winnipeg, Canada

The Arctic in Rapid Transition (ART) steering group and the Fresh Water Institute at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, are organizing a workshop on the development of the ART Implementation Plan to be held at the University of Manitoba, October 18-20, 2010. The workshop is endorsed and sponsored by the IASC SSC "Marine System", the former Arctic Ocean Science Board (AOSB).

The ART initiative is an integrative, international, interdisciplinary pan-Arctic program to study changes and feedbacks among the physical and biogeochemical components of the Arctic Ocean and their ultimate impacts on biological productivity. The goal of ART is to develop priorities for Arctic marine science over the next decade (ART Science Plan)

ART originates from the ICARP II effort on the Arctic marine environment (WG 3: Arctic Coastal processes, WG4: Deep Central Basin of the Arctic Ocean and WG5: Arctic margins and gateways, and WG6: Arctic shelf seas) and has been brought forward by the early career scientists of the ICARP II Marine Roundtable. ART was initiated by the formulation of the ART White Paper in March 2009 (http://aosb.arcticportal.org/pdf/ arcticrapidtransition_draft_march2009.pdf), which subsequently progressed to the ART Science Plan through the interactive work between the Arctic Ocean scientists at the ART Initiation workshop held in November 2009 in Fairbanks, Alaska (Workshop Report 2009). The next step now is to develop the ART Implementation Plan in order to further the goals of ART.

The objectives of the ART Implementation Plan Workshop are to prioritize the science questions in the ART Science Plan; describe a pathway for answering these science questions and recognize the needs of process studies, observations, and modeling as well as of synthesis of existing data; outline a mechanism for integrating the key components of the science plan; and where possible, identify proponents for taking the implementation plan into the funding process. In addition, a key component of this workshop is early career development. Senior scientists will share their experiences in the planning and implementation process with the early career scientists who have developed the ART initiative. For nurturing a productive environment the workshop agenda incorporates keynote presentations as well as detailed discussions in break-out sessions (Agenda).
